Bell Springs mountain lies between the coastal and interior zones of Mendocino county. The climate may be coastal part of the day or for weeks, and then the warmer interior air will dominate the climate for various periods. Temperatures range from 5 degrees to 105 or more. Deep snow and freezing conditions can be expected above 3000 feet each winter. The terrain is steep, rolling over open grasslands, mixed forests and creeks which carry 80 inches of annual rainfall to the Eel River below.
